Last day of this season. We had a good turnout for our work day to dissassemble and store the 2-33 and 1-26 into our 1/2 hangar. With Frank's Ka-6 at his place we were able to leave the gliders and wings side by side on the ground. It was a tight squeeze but everything fit.
It was still early and the sun was shining on a beautiful fall day. Greg Natke suggested we assemble the L-33 so anyone interested could take one more flight. Danny went first. When he landed Greg climbed in for his flight, but after hearing I needed to leave for a meeting, offered to let me fly first.
This was my first flight in the L-33. I was very pleased by the easy handling and solid feel of this plane. No surprises. I did one stall and there was a slight dropping of the right wing which was likely caused by my flying not being completely coordinated. As soon as I lowered the nose she was flying again. There was some 300fpm lift NE-SE over the hills to the east of Hamilton. I played a little in this then lowered the nose to get down so Greg could have his turn while the thermals were still working. Flying upper 50's felt right in the pattern and the spoilers seemed powerful, though I only used at most about 1/2. A tail low landing with just a slight increase in spoilers during the flair worked out great. (One note: If you hear a whistling while on tow, check that your spoilers are locked. Mine weren't. They stick up just a hair and this is visible from the cockpit)
Thanks Greg for letting me get a flight in!
As I was driving away from Hamilton I saw Greg over the hills just east of the airport. I hope he found the same lift.
Elmira's Snowbird Contest
It was a cloudy cold day, but that didn't discourage the Harris Hill club. There was non-stop flying activity from the time we arrived late morning until after we left late in the afternoon. With at least two dozen members and visitors flying up to four tows, the three towplanes were kept in constant action towing a few 2-33s and 1-26s.I saw some great flying with pilots touching down "exactly" on target and many who brought their ship to a short stop within feet of the target cone.
I took several hundred pictures today. Other then resizing, they were uploaded unprocessed leaving them a little dull of contrast. If anyone would like any of these images, email me at georgeh@twcny.rr.com and I will process and email the full resolution to you.
Thanks everyone for a fun afternoon!
